We are introducing a new medical student mentoring programme, looking to provide information, advice or guidance to current and future medical and master’s students during their time at the Faculty of Medicine. This programme is pastorally based, for students wanting advice relating to personal rather than academic matters. This may include (but not limited to), matters concerning work life balance, ethnicity, neurodiversity, religion, LGBTQ+, disability and long-term health conditions, care leavers and estranged students, mature students and those with dependants or caring responsibilities etc….
As a mentor, you would listen to your mentee, offering advice based on your experience and would empathise with their concerns. You would not be expected to act as a counsellor or academic advisor, instead you would signpost students to where they can get further advice if needed. There will be training provided for mentors before the opportunity to commit to the scheme.
As a mentee you can access the medical student mentoring database to search for a mentor with a similar background or shared lived experiences as you. You can email a mentor directly, their contact details are available. Please look at the medical student mentoring site for more information
Right now, we are looking for mentors in their areas of lived experience and expertise. The time commitment for potential mentors is flexible, to fit in with your schedule, and the time dedicated to mentoring is dictated by you. We provide accessible training materials to support you in this role.
